For our first campaign game on Xilos, we played 1000 points, with Concord defending and Ghar attacking. The driving reason for switching up the Ghar’s role was that I had just finished painting my X-Howitzer, which couldn’t be fielded in this scenario by the attacker. Brendan was kind enough to squeeze his Ghar into landers so I could use my new toy.
During the landing mini-game, the C3 got super lucky and managed to blow two battle squads and a command crawler out of the sky. The feeling of relief from the Concord forces was noticeable! Only one squad of armored Ghar manage to survive the landing and they overshot the landing zone. Luckily for the Ghar, though, they rolled a 9 for deployment and the Assault squad was free to enter on turn 1 wherever they wanted. Gulp.
The remaining Ghar landers held relatively weak troops, but they managed to land withing 10″ of ALL of the C3 infantry, meaning that the Concord troops would start with 4 elements on that table, 3 of which would be Down for the turn. Not good when there’s a Ghar assault squad lurking off board.
In turn 1, the Assault squad entered and tore through a Strike Squad. The down strike troopers tried to hold their position, but they couldn’t crack that thick Ghar armour.
The Assault Ghar would continue to advance down the board edge, slicing up another Strike Squad in the process, but the X-Howitzer managed to get in a good shot of Net ammo and start putting pins onto them.
Much of the game wound up pocketing on that board edge, as wave after wave of reinforcements on either side kept deploying in an effort to tip the balance. By turn 4, enough Concord forces had finally arrived to put the necessary pressure onto the Assault unit. After 3 turns of fire pouring into those battle suits, none had been removed from the table. The only way to take them down turned out to be pinning them out through a howitzer and an X-Launcher firing salvos of Net ammo. The Ghar finally accumulated 8 pins and left the table.
Good thing the three other Res 12 units got shot down on entry!!!
A unit of Outcasts that had exterminate the drop squad (so embarrassing) start to work its way toward the generator in the center in an attempt to leave the fray and secure the objective. The X-Howizter landed a beautiful Net shot on them, adding SIX pins to them. They already had 1 pin, so this pinned them out and we called the game in the C3’s favor.
The wide variety of activities in this scenario made it a ton of fun to play, and I have to take my hat off to the Ghar commander.
He put up a hell of a fight for playing at such a significant points handicap.
